Teen Seeks Valentines for Troops

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 3, 2005 - The California teenager who recently collected and distributed 1,000,000 letters and emails of appreciation to our service members and veterans, is now asking for Valentines for troops stationed in the United States and overseas.

Shauna Fleming, 15, a Sophomore at Lutheran High School in Orange, California, and founder of the A Million Thanks organization, said her campaign is about showing appreciation to the troops, and that Valentines are a great way for Americans to tell our troops that their hearts are with them.

The teen is now working on her second goal of adding 400,000 more thank you letters and emails to her total, which when reached, will symbolically give one thank you letter to each member of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Valentines she collects however, will not be counted toward her goal.

Due to the amount of Valentines she is expecting to receive, Fleming established a separate Web site containing a list of rules and guidelines.

After Fleming received the millionth thank you letter written by high school student, Stephanie Cope of Francis Howell North High School in St. Charles, Mo, she had it framed and presented it to President Bush in a private ceremony with her family in the Oval Office last month.

"Meeting President Bush was the most awesome experience. He was so very friendly. We talked about many things including his support for our troops," Fleming added.

After her visit with President Bush, the teen became the first to register her Web site on the Department of Defense's new website and campaign www.AmericaSupportsYou.mil

"America Supports You is a wonderful campaign which allows Americans to place on the website what they are doing to support our troops. Also, those who want to find out how to help, and even service members can log on to see what Americans from all over are doing to show their appreciation and support for our military and their families," said Fleming.
