Our military is an all volunteer force with more than 2.4 million people proudly serving our country in the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserve Components. Our military families comprise almost 3 million people, and the 63% of our military families who do not live on an installation live in over 4,000 communities throughout the United States and the world. The strength and support of our military families sustains our Service members and allows them to do their job, to protect and defend our country.
Since September 11, 2001, more than two million troops have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, many have deployed multiple times. The most prevalent request made by our service members serving on those dangerous battlefields was “Please take care of our families.” Our Service members and military families are facing unprecedented challenges as a result of frequent deployments: social, educational, physical, medical and emotional. As our men and women in uniform experience deployment, reintegration, and in some cases permanent injury or the ultimate sacrifice, it is vital that American communities better understand what our Service members and our military families are facing.
We hope that this web site will help you to learn not only about our military and our military families who contribute so much to our communities, but also about the tremendous spirit of support for our military that exists throughout the country. To that end, this web site also features stories of how our communities, non-profit organizations, individuals and corporations support our military in countless ways, and provides information about those organizations that provide such critical support.
