Our Lingo

There is a difference between an Officer in the military and an individual who is Enlisted.

  • Officers: members of the military who have been commissioned/appointed to serve at the pleasure of the President. All commissions are approved by Congress.
  • Enlisted personnel: members of the military who commit to serve their country for a set period time

Members of the military are referred to differently depending upon their specific Service.

  • Soldiers: Members of the Army
  • Sailors: Members of the Navy
  • Airmen: Members of the Air Force
  • Coast Guardsmen: Members of the Coast Guard
  • Marines: Members of the Marine Corps
