    • Securing the South Korea border
    • Keeping peace in Kosovo
    • Defeating adversaries in Afghanistan
  • Personnel:
    • 488,000 active duty soldiers deployed world-wide
    • 189,000 Army reserves
    • 346,000 Army National Guard.

  • The Navy fights on the water, under the water and over the water.
  • Every day, tens of thousands of Sailors and Marines and about 40 percent of all Navy ships are far from home.
  • Current responsibilities include:
    • Protecting allies from ballistic missile attack in the Pacific, Arabian Gulf and the Mediterranean
    • Catching drug smugglers in the Caribbean
    • Building new partnerships in South America, Southeast Asia and Africa.
    • Flying our Navy planes, launched from carriers sailing the Indian Ocean, for about one-third of the close-air support missions that protect our Soldiers and Marines on the ground in Afghanistan
  • Personnel:
    • 330,000 active duty
    • 120,000 Reservists deployed

  • The Marine Corps is responsible for providing power projection from the sea, utilizing the mobility of the U.S. Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces to global crises.
  • A part of the Navy Department, the Marines are the smallest of the United States Armed Forces in the Department of Defense
  • Current responsibilities include:
    • Serving as sea-based, integrated air-ground units for contingency and combat operations
    • Flying fighter jets based on Navy amphibious ships, nicknamed “big decks,” as well as drive tanks and ground vehicles.
  • Personnel:
    • 190,000 active duty Marines
    • 40,000 Marine Corps Reservists

  • The Air Force mission is to fly, fight and win…in air, space and cyberspace.
  • The Air Force is the newest service, formed just 64 years ago in 1947 when the Army Air Corps became an independent Air Force.
  • The Air Force has 3 core competencies- developing Airmen, technology-to-warfighting, integrating operations.
  • Current responsibilities include:
    • Protecting American airspace after September 11
    • Supporting air and ground combat ops since 2001 for Operation Enduring Freedom.

  • The Coast Guard is a military, multi-mission, maritime service with maritime safety and security operations, marine environmental protection, waterways management, and regulatory functions as well as homeland security and national defense operations.
  • The Coast Guard provides direct support to the Department of Defense and functions as a specialized service in the Department of the Navy in a time of declared war or by executive order.
  • Current responsibilities include:
    • Port waterways and coastal security
    • Drug and migrant interdiction
    • Aids to navigation
    • Performing search and rescue operations and marine environmental protection
    • Providing defense readiness and law enforcement operations.
  • Located within the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard is the only military service with statutory authority to enforce domestic U. S. laws.
  • Personnel:
    • 42,390 active-duty members
    • 6,945 reservists.

  • The Army and Air Force National Guard, organized by state, are the first military responders for domestic crises like Hurricane Katrina.
  • The Guard provides 35-40 percent of the Army and Air Force operational forces, serving in locations like Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa.
  • Current responsibilities include:
    • Providing wartime military support
    • Performing humanitarian, peacekeeping, and homeland security missions.
  • Members of the National Guard, as well as the Reserves, return to their civilian jobs in between activation periods.
  • Personnel:
    • 460,000 Soldiers and Airmen, located in over 3,300 American communities
  • Slogan: “Always ready. Always there.”
