The Coast Guard is a military, multi-mission, maritime service with maritime safety and security operations, marine environmental protection, waterways management, and regulatory functions as well as homeland security and national defense operations.
The Coast Guard provides direct support to the Department of Defense and functions as a specialized service in the Department of the Navy in a time of declared war or by executive order.
Current responsibilities include:
Port waterways and coastal security
Drug and migrant interdiction
Aids to navigation
Performing search and rescue operations and marine environmental protection
Providing defense readiness and law enforcement operations.
Located within the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard is the only military service with statutory authority to enforce domestic U. S. laws.
